Service Line

Reporting, Data & Process

Design of reporting frameworks, finance data architecture, and operational processes that scale. The infrastructure that separates organizations managing complexity from those overwhelmed by it. Focused on the decisions the reporting will support, not on comprehensive data availability.

When clients engage us

Situations that typically drive this conversation

01

Executives and the board are receiving different numbers from different sources

Multiple systems produce inconsistent figures because the underlying data model does not enforce consistency. Outlook addresses the underlying issue rather than reconciling at the presentation layer.

02

Reporting cycle times are too long to support decisions

Month-end reports that arrive three weeks after close cannot support operational decisions. Structured process and data redesign can compress the timeline materially.

03

Ad-hoc reporting consumes disproportionate analyst time

High volume of ad-hoc requests indicates the recurring reporting does not answer the questions leadership is actually asking. Redesign is warranted.

04

Dashboards exist but are not actively used

Prior reporting investments have produced dashboards that go unconsulted. The design typically addressed data availability rather than decision support.

05

An organization is preparing for institutional scrutiny

Investor, lender, or board reporting expectations exceed what current reporting infrastructure can support.

Capabilities

What this service line delivers

01

Executive and management reporting design

Reporting framework design focused on the decisions the reporting will support. Executive dashboards, board materials, department scorecards, and operational reviews calibrated to the audience and the time budget that audience has available. Designed for consumption, not for comprehensive data display.

02

Finance data architecture

Design and implementation of finance data models, master data management, and the integration logic that produces reliable numbers across systems. Addresses the structural issues that cause different sources to produce different answers to the same question.

03

Operational process design

End-to-end process design across finance functions. Identifies where manual work accumulates, where approvals create friction, and where information handoffs produce errors. Implements sustainable alternatives documented for internal maintenance.

04

Dashboard and visualization implementation

Business intelligence platform implementation and dashboard development using Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or the platform appropriate to the client environment. Focus on design quality — what the reporting shows and how — rather than purely technical implementation.

05

Reporting cycle acceleration

Structured programs to reduce month-end reporting cycle times. Addresses close process, data flow, consolidation logic, and the specific bottlenecks that create delays. Typically reduces cycle time from weeks to days.

The reporting data flow

From source through transformation to decisions

Reliable reporting is architecture, not aesthetics. Source data flows through transformation and modeling layers into a single source of truth, then out to the specific decision contexts each audience requires. Outlook engagements address the full pipeline.

Fragmented pipelines, inconsistent modeling, and missing business logic produce reports leadership does not trust.

Frequently asked

Questions clients ask before engaging

Which reporting platforms does Outlook work with?

Common platforms within team experience include Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Sisense, Domo, Qlik, and the native reporting environments within ERP systems such as NetSuite SuiteAnalytics and Sage Intacct Dimensions. Platform recommendations depend on the broader systems environment, user community, and specific analytical requirements rather than universal preferences.

Existing reporting continues during the design and build phases, then transitions to the new framework at defined milestones. Parallel operation is supported during validation periods to allow comparison and confidence-building before the legacy reporting is retired. This phased approach avoids the ‘big-bang’ cutover problems that derail many reporting modernizations.

Data quality issues are frequently root causes of reporting problems — the reporting shows inconsistent numbers because the underlying data is inconsistent. The Diagnostic phase assesses data quality explicitly, and remediation is included in engagement scope where required. In some cases, addressing data quality is prerequisite to the reporting redesign and is scoped as a distinct preliminary phase.

The reporting framework is designed from the audience backward. Executive audiences have minimal time budgets and require signal; board audiences require narrative-supported insight at a quarterly cadence; operational audiences require detail that supports day-to-day decisions; investor audiences require formats aligned to their specific review patterns. The framework accommodates each audience with appropriate views rather than forcing one format across all users.

Adoption is frequently where reporting investments fail. We build adoption support into the Transition phase: user training structured by role, executive champion engagement, usage monitoring, and iterative refinement based on actual usage patterns in the first sixty to ninety days post-launch. Reporting that is beautifully designed but unused is a poor return on investment.
